Bais Refoel Foundation

A few years ago, as a service to the community, The Bais Refoel Foundation prior to Passover had a Shaimos initiative that allowed people to drop off Shaimos at the hospitality house for proper disposal. This project had two benefits, we were able to make sure Shaimos was properly handled and it helped raise awareness of our hospitality house by bringing people there. Due to the success of the program, we decided to keep it as an ongoing program.
Some Basic information about Shaimos
Shaimos is a name that refers to objects and written or printed materials that are considered “holy” having “Kedusha” and their proper disposal by respectfully burying them.

The word Shaimos originates from the root of the Hebrew word Shem which translates as name. We typically refer to G-d as Ha Shem (The Name) in conversation, reserving G-d's actual names for prayer.

The following items are considered Shaimos:

  • Seforim , Chumashim, Siddurim, Gemara’s, Benchers in any form including covers and pages – original, copies…
  • Quotes, work sheets, home work - that explain or reference any holy works.
  • Any Halachic materials – Flash cards, Posters…
  • Invitations and other communications that contain Pesukim.
  • Mezuza’s, Mezuza covers, Tefillin, Tefillin cases and bags.
  • Sefer Torah, Covers, Crowns, Yads, Plates…
  • Any Names of Ha Shem in any form.
  • Tzitzis – only the actual strings
  • The language of the materials is not relevant, the content is.

This is just an overview if you have more questions, please ask your rabbi or contact us.

Where to Place the Shaimos
Please place your Shaimos ONLY in the bins at the end of the driveway next to the shed. We need to be respectful of the Shaimos, not have perceived litter issues with the City of Royal Oak and in general keep our Hospitality House nice. After you have left Shaimos, we would appreciate a call, email, text, WhatsApp or communication via our webform so we know there is Shaimos to be disposed of. This is a FREE service but your donations are always welcome and appreciated. While you’re at the house, please stop in and look around.
